Weston Filming Weekend

A group of 6 cherubbers, 2 trainee cherubbers and 4 cherubs battled the elements to capture previously unseen angles on Cherub sailing on video.

Saturday dawned with very little wind but rigging went ahead and boats were launched. Some innovative camera techniques were employed from the Cherubs (not the most stable of platforms!). Boats were packed up and then the Cherubbers went off in search of food, boat bimbling and a suitable television for footage viewing. The footage showed much promise with many high quality multi-boat sequences collected between the obligatory crotch-shots and “Is it on?” questions (including one with an answer of “No”).

Sleep was interrupted for some due to the extreme winds battering the south coast and the rest of the UK. We knew we were in for a big one come Sunday morning as forecasts had suggested anywhere from force 4 to storm force 11! On arrival at Weston it was discovered that racing had been cancelled. Team Flying Kipper threw caution to the wind and rigged up like true heroes on the quest for the perfect footage. Their sail was short lived as the 35+ knot gusts battered them before they could get the rudder locked down and after some exquisite boat handling they got nailed and came in with grins, honour satisfied and no breakages! Whilst all this took place, those wimpy yachts taking part in the Hamble winter series decided to abandon. Below is a shot of a why.

We encourage all of you to take as much Cherub footage as you can. Examples of crazy footage can be seen on the Videos page using techniques such as 'head cam' and 'spreader vision' (very simple to achieve, simply ductape a waterproof digital camera to your spreaders and go sailing!)
