Cherub Nationals 1975

David Finch and Peter Lavender sailing “Kipper”, their three year old boat, proved to be the decisive winners of the Simpson Cup for the Cherub National Championship sailed at Grafham Water SC from July 29th to August 2nd in extremely tricky conditions.

Kipper's 5-point victory came about with a consistency no one else could match. She counted two 1sts, two 2nds, and a 3rd, discarding a further 3rd and a 7th.

Chris Forman and Nick Mason who sailed “Tachyon” into second place over ¼ point ahead of last year's champions Tony and Jill Hows, were helped by the discard system which enabled them to drop two positions in the teens. Forman won two races, but was more fortunate than Tim Powell and Ian Duke, in the new Robinson flattie design, which crossed the line twice in pole position but was disqualified on one occasion for having crossed the extension of the line when the one- minute rule was in force. Other race winners were Tony Hows and Ray? Arthur.

Most of the seven race series was sailed in winds that varied from Force 1 to 3 and directions that were totally unpredictable. It was not an uncommon occurrence for boats sailing in the same direction only feet apart to be on opposite tacks.

Surprise of the week was R&P, Tim Powell's new boat which sports a revolutionary over-rotating wing mast made by Needlespar from their lightweight boom section. We shall have to wait and see whether it was this, o the hull shape, or a combination of the two, which produced very early planing.

I have a newsletter report which states "I have the feeling it is not everyone's wish to have an in depth, blow by blow account of the Nationals" and then goes on to discuss points and discards and not mention the sailing. Maybe you had to be there? It seems to have been a predominantly light airs event with two races sailed in a moderate breeze.
