Welcome to 2016 from the Cherub Class committee!!!

We have a busy year ahead and wanted to highlight a few things that will be happening in the coming months.

Class Subs

As of the 1st of January, 2016 class subs are now due. This year we have kept the subs at the same level as previous years of £30 for full membership. This enables members to access to the members side of the forum and entry into nationals. The money raised from membership is used to promote the class at the dinghy show as well as pay our subs to the RYA and pay for the website.

Details of the new bank account and how subscribe can be found here: http://www.uk-cherub.org/doku.php/shop

Amendments to Class Rules

During November and early December we completed the voting for amendments to the class rules. Majority of these were administrative amendments to clean up how the class in managed.

The new rules will come into force on the 13th of March 2016.

A copy of the new rules can be found on the website here: http://www.uk-cherub.org/doku.php/rules

Boat Show

We are making very good progress on the plans for the boat show. Eleanor will be our boat on the stand. We will be looking for help manning the stand so if anybody wants to get invovled please hit up Jamie (JP233) onthe forum.

Nationals and Open meetings

This years nationals will be held as part of the Torbay Regatta running from teh 20th to the 23rd of August. There will be a non counting pursuit race on the 24th. We will be launching from Torquay Harbour.

If you have wondered what it is like to sail a 12 foot carbon speed machine now is your chance

On Saturday May 28th a number of Cherubs will be at Queen Mary SC, Sunbury and offering rides.

Simply grab your wetsuit and life jacket and turn up. If you have a trapeze harness please bring it.

Sailing will be available from 12pm and is of course weather dependent

It would help organise sailing if you let us know you are coming. Please do that on the Queen Mary thread in the events section of our forum

Cherub Inland Championship at Queen Mary Sailing Club

Cherub Inland Championship at Queen Mary Sailing Club

With the season drawing to a close, ten UK Cherubs took the opportunity to take to the water for the Cherub Inlands at Queen Mary Sailing Club for two days of racing in sunshine and light and variable winds.

Along with the usual suspects were a few more 97 rules boats than we have become used to in the last few events and with around 5-10 knots of wind, close racing was on the agenda.

From the start it was clear Eddie and Sam, sailing Riot van, were here for business, pulling a port flyer off the line on the first race to take a comfortable lead up the first leg as the fleet chased, Conditions proved tricky, with a few ladders and plenty of snakes to be found on the course. Wriggling your way through the elusive lifts paid in a big way and it was the local favourites Andy and Jill Peters on board Usagi that made the most of local knowledge to win the first race with Riot Van second and Ronin third. Special mention to Jamie and Rosie who tore through the field on board The Shiny Beast after being late to the start to finish in a solid fourth. By race three momentum had shifted and it as Riot Van that went into the overnight break with two wins from three races and the event lead.

Just as interesting was the battling for position in the 97 rules boats with three boats challenging for position. Saturdays racing for the 97 rules was tighter than the leaders and certainly closer than it looked on the score boards at the end of the day. After the days racing it was Greg and Stephen sailing Madge that headed the 97 field, but with crew Stephen unable to make Sundays racing that was all to change.

After the now seemingly mandatory Saturday night Curry and road cone foolery along with some well-earned rest, Sunday initially brought twin wiring conditions for the 05 rules boats, with wind gradually reducing throughout the day.

As race four started the leading trio once again found their feet and team Riot Van continued to stretch their legs and pulled another two wins to confirm the series win. With Ronin struggling to get off the line in race five, Usagi was all but confirmed to finish second and Ronin to be third. This had the interesting effect of two boats finishing the travellers trophy on equal points forcing the results to be decided on count back. Meanwhile Elanor and Jimmy managed to sail a consistent regatta to wind up with honours in the 97 rules Category.

With another season of cherub sailing coming to a close, in terms of open meetings, it would be easy to try and look back and try and establish things we have learned over the year, this can sometimes get too thorough for my liking so I'll keep it simple:

Firstly foiling is clearly faster once there is enough wind.
Second, and most importantly, Cherubs in whichever configuration you have, are still a huge amount of fun to sail.
I would like to congratulate Eddie Bridle and Sam Curtis on winning the 2016 Cherub Inlands and Andy and Jill Peters on taking the 2016 Travellers trophy.
Also, I would like to thank Queen Mary Sailing club for hosting the event and getting races managed so well, the Rs700 class for sharing the event, as well as all the competitors who came along. I hope to be seeing you all again next year.

Four boats (Ronin, EJ, Banshee Ambulance and the Shiny Beast) made it to this event, which was shared with B14s, Musto Skiffs and RS700s. Jamie's Rutland-phobia appeared misplaced - not arctic at all; no gales; no mountainous waves.

Ronin dominated the event, winning all but one when their masthead unit disintegrated but managed to lock the kite halyard - with the kite up!
The results look more ordered than most of the racing actually was. At one stage Cherubs were 3 abreast at the windward mark, and places changed throughout the races, including right up to the finish.

The wind was up and down all weekend (Saturday 5-16 Sunday 6-15), both days with sunshine :)

Shifty as well, which caused a number of unexpected swims (across all the classes)

2016 Open Meeting 2 Sheppy

So, where to begin?

The end would make sense.

Results were this.

With a few teams arriving Friday night, it was off in to town to try and find a friendly chicken shop, unfortunately it had closed. Onwards to the kebab shop.
Check on the race course super early, like the rya says we should, we unpacked and got in to sleeping bags when we heard foot steps coming up the stairs, turns out she wasn't a strippergram, but a real police woman!

Day 1:

Wind was on and the waves were up.
Many boats chose to go for small sails as the forecast was set to increase. Some of us were quite envious of Greg and Zara in Madge. Eleanor had to retire due to an unplugged bung.

Race 1:

The Peters started and never looked back, Dave Ching and Isaac rounded the top mark and tried to get some speed on then realising they rigged the kite wrong.
Robin jones in banshee rounded third but crew, Ellie, decided she'd rather be a trawler woman. The shiny beast rounded fourth to then overtake the upturned banshee. EJ who were late for the start was playing catchup all race but managed to get back to 4th on the final run to the finish.

Race 2:

This saw Dave an Issac sit out the race to re rig the kite ashore leaving Usagi, Elenor and EJ to battle it out. Usagi got a small lead but was kept honest all the way round with EJ and Elenor swapping posting multiply times on the beat only for EJ to break a gooseneck at the top mark to end that battle. It also saw the traditional banshee being sailed off the course by shiny.

Race 3:

saw all but three cherubs ashore, Usagi was pacing the line in the fresher breeze, Little Chilli was darting about and the Shiny Beast was capsized drifting towards the pin end for a quick recover and off. That was the plan.
All three boats leaped across the line only for Little Chilis jib clew plate to explode, and the Shiny Beasts starboard tiller to be on the post side wrapped around the main sheet and the trap lines.
This left the shiny beast in a war of attrition, after sorting out their problems they did a lap, let Usagi pass them hoping for a shorted course. No hooter, so they gave up.

Saturday night the usual Sheppy entertainment was very good fun with human Hungry hippos being one of the highlights of the night.

Day 2:

Less wind and less waves.

Race 1:

most competitors woke up with the usual headache. Except one.
Ej rounded first, with little chilli close behind. Leaving Usagi, banshee, madge and shiny playing catch up. EJ, Chilli and Usagi pulled a gap to the chasing pack in the dyeing breeze with some lead swaps up both the second and third beats as they fought the tide. It ended with Chilli being the right side of a van of breeze to get the win with Usagi second and Ej third.

The remaining races were abandoned due to dyeing breeze and a ripping tide making it hard for the light cherubs to get any forward/upwind gains.

Damage list:

One clew plate

One goose neck.

One T foil

Jamie's stomach.

2016 Open Meeting 3 Queen Mary

2016 Open Meeting 3 Queen Mary

A 3 day Cherub extravaganza was held over the late May Bank Holiday kindly hosted by Queen Mary SC. Saturday was for blasting, boat swapping and general bimbling whilst Sunday and Monday were for serious racing.

Saturday saw the first launch of the latest Cherub - Green Bananas by the proud owners Nick and Jo keen to take advantage of an ideal first sail wind of force 2-3. Not quite enough to excite everyone else however all boats went for a sail before retiring to Lower Sunbury for a curry and some alcoholic tall tale telling.

Sunday dawned colder but with more wind. From the North it varied greatly in both direction and strength leading to some ladders for some (yes you Dean and Simon) and snakes for others. 3 races were held with Jonny and Alex Harris in Ronin making the best of the conditions to lead overnight with a 1,2,3 scoreline. Hard on their heels were Dean and Simon in Eleanor who won the 2nd and 3rd races with stunning last beats to lift themselves into the lead at the most important point of the race - the finish. Others had a mixed day with the normally consistent Andy and Jill Peters in Usagi dropping a race due partly to gear failure and partly to a bit of lazer lovin', Jamie and Rosie in Shinny had probably the best of the rest with 3 good finishes. Despite winds of upto 20knts there were few retirements and only one breakage due to teething issues with Green Bananas. Sharing the racing with the club fleets was generally successful - if you count success as scaring the hiking shorts off lazer sailors (which we do).

With only one race on the Sunday, participating in the club's 2 hour pursuit race, Roinin only had to beat Usagi to win as Eleanor couldn't sail Monday. Despite port tacking the start Usagi had to double tack at the windward mark handing Ronin a lead they defended ably until the end, just missing out on winning the pursuit race by a matter of inches. Usagi kept them honest to finish 2nd Cherub and 4th in the pursuit and Jay and Joe sEARd through the fleet into 3rd.

The Cherubs are back at QMSC in early October for their Inlands and given the autumnal weather over the Bank Holiday this was a good warm up for the more serious business later in the year. Will Usagi be able to defend their title or will it be taken away by Ronin, Eleanor or another challenger.
