Pwllheli Nationals 2012 Day 1

The first day of the 2012 Cherub Nationals started with sunshine and a good breeze. 23 boats left the shore for two interesting races in the wind and swell off Pwllheli Sailing Club.

Race 1

Clive and Alex Everest in Subtle Knife were quick off the start line closely followed by Jill and Andy Peters in Usagi. Clive and Alex were able to maintain their lead and were first round the windward mark followed by Phil and Carol Alderson in Pocket Rocket and Graham and Eddie Bridle in Riot Van. This was how the positions were to remain at the front of the fleet till after three interesting laps the race officer shortened the race, giving Clive Everest a win in his first Cherub nationals race sailing with his Son Alex who is the youngest competitor in the fleet.

Race 2

The second race started in 22 Kts and the swell had increased considerably for the second race with Paul Croote, and Tom in Marmite getting off the line quickly followed by Subtle Knife and Pocket Rocket. After three rounds the race finished with Pocket Rocket, followed by Subtle Knife, and Riot Van.

The waves made the three races of Day 2 very challenging and it took most crews race or two before they figured out their manoeuvres.

Clive Everest extended his lead on the championships with another two firsts, and a second in some challenging conditions, closely followed by Eddie and Graham Bridle in Riot Van.

In the middle of the fleet the 97 rules club were showing their speed in the wind and waves, with some impressive performances from Tim and Kate Noyce in Comfortably Numb just behind Stu Hopson and Ben Howett in Born Slippy.

By race 5 the waves had built even further, which seemed to suit Elanor who improved on a 4th and a 3rd in the previous two races to score their first win of the championships.

The wind and waves had abated significantly for Day 3, giving us the perfect conditions for racing. To catch up with the programme the Race Officer scheduled 4 races. The fleet surprised the race officer by being on the line at the start and there were even a few over that needed to go back. With a quick beat upwind the race was on. Following a smooth rounding of the top mark the 05's were off flying down the first run with the 97's not far behind. Marmite took the kite low and a couple of laps later they had the first win of the day, with Riot Van and Elenor coming in close behind. A quick turn around assured a swift start to the second race where things started to get a little competitive, as the wind had eased further. Pasta Frenzy finally showed what it was made of by flying off on the downwind legs and keeping up with the 05's. The third race saw the wind get a bit lighter and the heavy weight crews suffered as a result, Riot Van scored another win followed by Ronin, and Marmite made up the top three.. The wind filled in again for the fourth race with Riot Van taking line honours for the third time of the day. With big winds expected for tomorrow it is all to play for, with 2 points separating the top two Riot Van and Subtle Knife with Eleanor sneaking in 7 points behind its tight competition. In the 97 fleet Born Slippy are the favourites but Comfortably Numb could pull it out the bag!!

Pwllheli Nationals 2012 Day 4

After Thursday night's energetic AGM and fun in the bar, the fleet braced themselves for an early start. The forecast for the fourth and final day of the Nationals was looking grim: 8 foot waves and 30 knot gusts. This was a little worrying, but fortunately the weather man had got it wrong and upon launching we found a moderately bumpy race course with a nice 10-15kts of wind. This made for some good wave jumping and some epic downwind surfing.

At the front of the fleet there was a good battle with last year's winners Graham and Eddie Bridle in Riot Van stretching their lead over Marmite, Eleanor and Subtle Knife. Eleanor and Subtle had some close racing, and in the final race Eleanor seemed to have completed a daring overtaking manoeuvre coming in hot to the bottom mark, only to capsize allowing Subtle to slip through. Pocket Rocket and Atum Bom were wonderfully consistent with 3 5ths and 6ths respectively. This cemented Pocket's 4th place overall and Atum's 5th.

Meanwhile the '97 rules fleet was having a right old ding dong. Pasta Frenzy was showing excellent speed, but couldn't quite overhaul Born Slippy in the final results after their superb handling of the strong breeze of days 1 and 2.

So ultimately Graham and Eddie won their second Nationals in style having shown their strength and persistence in difficult conditions and supreme speed when it mattered. Another father and son team came in second - Clive and Alex Everest in Subtle Knife showed that size and strength are less vital than skill and energy.

The week has been a joy. A full report and results will follow when we've recovered from the night's festivities.

Stokes Bay Open 2012

In stark contrast to the conditions in Pwllheli the forecast for the weekend at Stokes Bay was for light winds and substantially smaller waves! The close proximity to the nationals resulted in a reduced turnout for the event but 2 pairs of 05 and 97 rules boats meant that there was the opportunity for some good class racing in addition to that provided by the local handicap fleet. The first race kicked off just after midday with the plan for 4 laps of the windward leeward course. Tactics were very tide orientated and the boats had to be worked hard as there was a fine line between having the weight too far back and ploughing through waves. By the end of 2 laps Ben and Charlie in Atom Bom had done enough to take the win with Loco making the most of their National 12’esque hull taking 2nd just ahead of Comfortably Numb and Born Slippy. Due to the relaxed nature of the ‘back to back’ racing there was a brief pause in between races which allowed the teams to pop ashore for a drink and to apply some by now necessary sun cream!

In this time the tide had stepped up a notch and the wind had decided to take a time out which led to an interesting second race of the day. All 4 Cherubs arrived at the windward mark amongst the mid fleet pack of the general handicap fleet being pushed upwind by the tide, bearing away and hoisting around the mark with kites filling then turned into a game of tidal snakes and ladders in which all 4 of the boats took a turn of thinking that they were in front and had done enough to gybe and clear the windward mark in order to get inshore to the slower moving tide. More often than not though by the time you had gybed and made it back across to the mark the tide had pushed you back upwind past it and so you had to repeat the process. After what seemed like forever the wind finally filled in enough to make some headway and the boats headed back off downwind in very marginal wiring conditions. Atom once again took the win ahead of Loco whilst the 2 97’s were involved in some very tight tactical racing down by the leeward mark. Numb was behind Slippy going in to the bottom mark but utilising the sneaky double gybe they managed to gain the overlap and sneak through to stay ahead along the reach to the finish line. The teams returned ashore to eat and rehydrate after one of the longest single lap races in memory only for the wind to switch back on for Ben and Charlie to go out for a proper hoon in some fully powered up conditions to enjoy some champagne solent sailing. Fish and chips with a sunset view was enjoyed by some whilst others left to recharge their batteries / go drinking (delete as appropriate).

The happy campers were awoken by the noise of clanking rigging in the boat park due to a solid 20knots blowing out on the water, but within an hour this had dropped to almost half that in time for an early morning start for 3 scheduled races. The handicap fleet had grown overnight with additional moths, musto’s, Lasers and a superstar line up in the Rebel hitting the water with the prospect of some good racing to be had. Charlie had been replaced by Sam aboard Atom Bom and with some more wind in the sails the Cherubs set off in fine form for race 3 tussling with the quicker boats in the fleet planing more readily upwind. The tide was still king so good gains could be made by going the right way up the beat. Atom showed the way round the course having an excellent tussle with a local RS800 and Numb was revelling in being powered up downwind taking on tail end Musto’s and Laser 4000. After one lap all was going well until rounding the leeward mark and the mainsail fell down. Kate on the board and Tim floundering about in the water trying to re-tie the mainsail in the notorious solent chop allowed Slippy and Loco to sneak through to carry on to finish the race Atom, Slippy, Loco with a soggy Numb bringing up the rear. For race 4 Loco had decided that having completed 3 times as many races as at the nationals that they would quit whilst they were ahead and retire to the warm showers as by now the fog had come in and it was sogging (you know that kind of rain which isn’t proper rain but just seems to make you wet and miserable?!) With the wind up a bit the gulf in pace between the powered up t-foiled Atom Bom and the 97 boats meant that bar a major mess up the Open meeting would be sewn up before long but it was still all to play for to be top dog in the 97’s. Atom went on to beat the 800 over the water again and after a few laps Numb brought it home ahead of Born Slippy despite differing techniques upwind. Numb opted for a pinch and point approach in order to keep their lane off the start against the other boats with Born Slippy footing off and sailing with more pace through the chop (both seemed to work equally well with there never being too much distance between the boats at the business end of the legs. By race 5 Atom was really in the groove and they were really starting to cruise around the course in style picking up their best result of the weekend with a very respectable 4th in the handicap fleet. Numb took 2nd place ahead of Slippy despite putting in a very late surge down the final run showing what a 97 rules boat is capable of given a bit of breeze (there may even have been a bit of yee-haaa’ing audible from near by!).

A massive congratulations to Ben, Charlie and Sam for taking their first Cherub Open meeting win almost a year to the day since they first sailed the boat together, and also for finishing 4th overall in the handicap fleet to take home a couple of bottles of wine. Thanks to Stokes Bay SC for a lovely weekend on and off the water, and we would be very keen to go back their again next year!

UK Cherub Nationals 2012 (21 – 24 August 2012) - Overall report

Whilst big breeze might have been on most of the Cherub fleet’s wish list for the Nationals, big waves were probably not - but that’s what they got for the first two days. The race officer managed to get 5 races in, but for many it was survival sailing and it was the ’97 rules boats with slightly smaller sails which were really enjoying themselves. After day 1, Phil and Carol Alderson (AKA Team Scotland) were lying in first place, Clive Everest and son Alex in second and Graham and Eddie Bridle, last year’s father –son winning team in third. With further success on day two, Clive and 11 year old Alex were leading, the form book had apparently gone out of the window and the challenge was laid. However conditions on days 3 and 4 were much more benign and it turned out that Graham and Eddie had just been teasing everyone after all - they found their groove and won the last 6 races to take the championship in style and retain the Simpson Cup.

There was intense racing between the ’97 rules fleet (smaller sails, generally speaking single wire and no t-foil) all week. Born Slippy reveled in the windy conditions under the experienced hands of Stu Hopson and Ben Howett. Comfortably Numb and Madge both crewed by husband-wife teams were in the mix, Madge sporting more than just a smart new paint job – she had fittings and a mast for the first time in years. Ade and Joe White, yet another father-son team, enjoyed their first nationals and showed some good speed in the beautifully refurbed Sweet Dreamz . The gentler conditions of days 3 and 4 allowed the speed of Pasta Frenzy to shine through, but despite their late surge, Stu Tinner and guest crew Becky Goodwin couldn’t overhaul Born Slippy in the final results.

It was a tough week of conditions for crews and boats. The boats stood up well, and the crews did their best, but unfortunately some extreme Welly Wanging during Pwllheli Beach Olympics resulted in a badly dislocated shoulder for Paul Clements.

Pwllheli Sailing Club provided excellent hospitality all week and the fleet particularly enjoyed the prize giving dinner. The Welsh weather had still not finished with us and made its presence felt with a thunder storm that almost drowned out the cheering, and rain that threatened the integrity of the marquee. The traditional Cherub prizes were awarded alongside the standard glassware. The Davey for the most spectacular capsize of the week was hotly contested given the sea state, but was ultimately awarded to Tim and Kate Noyce in Comfortably Numb for the reaction elicited from the nearby rib driver “I thought you were going to land in my boat”. The prize for the most beautiful boat went to Marmite, built by Aardvark and owner Paul Croote, and the Phoenix for the best restoration to Ade and Joe White for their superb job on Sweet Dreamz. The spanking paddle was returned to its rightful home with Stu Tinner, administered by Matt Kiddle gallantly stepping in for his absent brother.

Bonfire Blast 3-4th November 2012 - Netley Sailing Club

It's back! The Bonfire Blast Netley Sailing Club 3-4 November

And yes - there will be fireworks!

It's been far too long since the last Cherub event but thanks to Tim and Kate and Netley Sailing Club, a re-run of last year's very successful Bonfire Blast is on the cards.

The plan:

Saturday 3rd November - go for a sail, do some tuning/training/testing/swapping, chance for people to have go.
Saturday night - Very impressive fireworks; eat and drink at club (details TBC). Camping at club
Sunday 4 November - 2 club races

Cost TBC but last year was very reasonable and should not be too different this time around. [Tim will collect money and account to the club].
