Don’t Do it

There are some things that you should never do when maintaining a Cherub. At least not if you want to keep on sailing reliably

Don't Forget the Peel Ply

When laminating you will always need to use more resin to throughly wet out the cloths than the minimum required by the final laminate. By using peal ply even on smaller repair jobs you can soak up the remaining resin that ends up on the surface after consolidating the layup. You may well say that peel ply is expensive. Well when compared to the sandpaper that you would otherwise use to remove the excess resin peel ply suddenly looks very reasonable. Add to that the time saved by avoiding the additional sanding and you're quids in.

It will never hold

Never attach fittings to your foam boat with wood screws, it just does not work, they will pull out. You may say it is OK if you use a wooden backing piece and the fitting is low load, but you are taking a risk the wood will absorb water and get soft, the fitting will pull out.

Never bolt high load fittings to a foam sandwich panel without a large washer or backing plate or at least replacing the foam with a plug of filler. The foam will crush and it will break.

It will always leak

Never fit a hatch cover to a curved deck. Hatch covers tend to leak at the best of times and if you are trying to fit it to a bit of deck that is not flat then it will always leak.

Never skimp on the thickness of the centreboard case. The centreboard case takes loads of abuse and once the boat has been built it is difficult to get to, so there is no point in saving a few grams by building the case super flimsy. Any weight you save there will more than be made up a couple of years down the line by a small leak that you can’t fix.

It will not last

Never tie string to a pressed shackle or deck eye. If there is any movement in the string the sharp edges of the fitting will saw through the string, if lightly loaded it may last a few years, but heavily loaded it may not last the day!

Composite Spinny Chute. If you have a foredeck you will find that the kite halyard will cut grooves in the rear edge of the chute. If this is reinforced with a stainless or ally plate it will last for years. This needs to be faired in with no sharp edges of protruding screws otherwise your kite will be in shreds. Some fore decked boats are fitted with a stainless or ally tube mouted horizontally across the back of the chute just below deck level. This works too.

If you don't have a foredeck go for a stainless hoop style chute. Do not try a composite equivalent. You will forever be filling the groves cut in it by the kite halyard.

It will just be heavy

The place to try some things out and get a feel for what you write will look like is the:

Inserting Images

This is quite fiddly.

Edit the page to which to want to attach an image.

Hit the “insert image” button on the toolbar

There is a possibility that your popup blocker may stop the new page from loading, so if you are having problems it is worth checking your settings.

Choose the folder (called “namespaces” in wiki language for some reason) that the image is to go into by clicking the list on the left. Basically if the image is of a boat or boats then it should go in 'boats'.

The upload form is at the bottom of the list of image files.

All you need to do is to type the number of the boat or biggest boat in the bottom box, and choose the file to upload by browsing your own computer in the top box. If there are loads of boats in the picture, type 'fleet'. Please shrink huge images to less than about 100k.

The middle box automatically datestamps your image, and does an incrimental final letter too. You can change the date if you are uploading something that happened years ago or whatever.

If you are confused, please email Phil the picture. Please don't upload it anyway as renaming images is a prize arse to sort out.

Once your image is uploaded you'll get a message at the top of the screen saying the filename it was uploaded under. Find that file in the list, click the filename and you'll be transported back to the page editor, only there'll be some sytax there that looks like this:

This is rendered into an image when you save the page.

Inserting Video

This is done exactly the same as images. If it is a video of a boat then it should go in 'boats'. If it is of a person it should go in 'people'. If it is a technical video that is not of any particular boat or person then put it in 'tech'. If it is of a design and not of a particular boat then it goes in 'designs'. If it is none of the above then put it in 'news'.

If it is going in news then just name it as the date of the day you upload it. (The uploading form will do this for you but please remove the leading “-” from the automatically generated filename if you can. Leave the other box blank.)

If it is going in 'boats' then put the boat number in the bottom of the two name boxes.

If it is goiing in people then put the person's name like this in the bottom box: 'phil_alderson'

If it is going in tech please put one or two words to describe it in the bottom box: 'spreader'

Material Selection

All articles on the Cherub website are written by amateurs and are intended as guides only, while building boats is an enjoyable hobby some of the chemicals involved are harmful and the appropriate safety precautions should be taken.

Composite construction is based on the idea of combining materials together to give final product that shares and exceeds the properties of the individual components. Having an understanding of how the individual materials behave will enable you to make better choices in material choice for repairing, modifying and building your Cherub.

Traditionally Cherubs were made from Plywood which is in itself a composite material and is actually a very good material for boat building; however with modern materials it is possible to create a lighter, stiffer structure using Fibre Reinforced Plastic. In FRP construction the main strength comes from the properties and orientation of the fibres, these are encased in a thermosetting resin that binds them together and provides a water resistant barrier. The fibre reinforcement is the component that takes most of the load and as such correct selection is critical, however if the fibres have not bonded to the resin the structure will not work.

Resin

The choice of resins for boat building is largely between Epoxy and Polyester. Both are generally two part where a hardener if added to a resin, this starts a chemical reaction which changes the resin from a liquid to a solid, hopefully bonding all the parts of your structure together in the process.

Cloth

To get the best out of your laminate you need to choose the correct material in the correct style in the correct quantities for the loads that you can expect. This is the great advantage of composite construction in that you can reduce weight by correct selection of materials; however it does make the whole thing more difficult.

Style

UD, woven, Bi axial etc

Woven Fabrics

Woven fabrics are produced by the interlacing of warp (0°) fibres and weft (90°) fibres in a regular pattern or weave style. The fabric’s integrity is maintained by the mechanical interlocking of the fibres. Drape (the ability of a fabric to conform to a complex surface), surface smoothness and stability of a fabric are controlled primarily by the weave style.

Plain Each warp fibre passes alternately under and over each weft fibre. The fabric is symmetrical, with good stability and reasonable porosity. However, it is most difficult drape, and the high level of fibre crimp imparts relatively low mechanical properties compared with the other weave styles.

Twill One or more warp fibres alternately weave over and under two or more weft fibres in a regular pattern. One result of this is the appearance of a staggered diagonal in the laminate. The twill has improved wet out and drape than plain weave although it does fall apart more easily. With reduced crimp, the fabric also has a smoother surface and slightly higher mechanical properties.

Satin Satin weaves are twill weaves modified to produce fewer intersections of warp and weft each fibre will typically cross 4, 5 before passing under one. Satin weaves are very flat, have good wet out and a high degree of drape. The low crimp gives good mechanical properties. However they do tend to fall apart easily.

Basket Basket weave is the same as plain weave except that pairs of warp fibres alternately interlace with pairs of weft fibres. It can also be done with more two pairs of fibres; this pattern has less crimp than plain weave and is often used on heavy fabrics.

Non Woven Fabrics

Non woven fabrics are typically held together with a binder material or stitched together with a thin thread. This means that the fibres can have minimum or no crimp. This improves the mechanical properties of the laminate particularly improving the stiffness.

All the non woven fabrics are variations on a theme, with Unidirectional having fibres running in only one direction bi-axial having fibres in two directions and multi-axial having many directions.

Chopped Strand Another type of non woven cloth is chopped strand mat. This consists of short lengths of fibre randomly distributed and held together with a binding agent. Due to the short fibre lengths chopped stand has very poor mechanical properties and the binding agent is only designed to dissolve in polyester so if you use Epoxy you will get a very poor bond onto a weak structure.

Fibre Orientation

The Orientation of fibres in a composite has a large impact on the mechanical properties of the laminate structure. If you were to take a length of unidirectional cloth and laminate it so that all the fibres lay in one direction (0 degrees) then the fibres would contribute fully to the stiffness only in the 0 degrees direction, at 90 degrees they would do nothing the only strength would come from the resin matrix. This means to get to get the best out of a composite the fibers

Glass

Glass fibre is the cheapest of the reinforcing materials and is the most widely used material in general boat building

Kevlar® (Aramid)

This was one of the first high strength synthetic fibres to gain acceptance in boat building, Kevlar® (Aramid) has a considerably higher tensile strength and modulus than fibreglass. One disadvantage of using aramid is that when sanded it tends to become fluffy, therefore if there is any requirement to sand after cure a layer of fibreglass should be used over the top.

Carbon

Graphite fibres contain up to 95% carbon and yield the highest tensile strength currently available. These fibres woven together form carbon fabric. These fabrics offer higher strength and stiffness-to-weight ratios than any other commonly available reinforcements. The carbon fabric comes in several different quality grades this is known as the modulus.

Core

One of the main advances in FRP construction was in the use of a low density foam core between the outer skins of FRP In a sandwich panel, the core functions like the connecting web of an I-beam, separating the face skins at a constant distance, while the skins themselves function as the I-beam flanges. The sandwich panel's bending stiffness is proportional to the core thickness, in the same way an I-beam is stiffer as the distance between the flanges increases. Doubling the core thickness yields a panel six times stronger and 12 times stiffer.

Foam core helps distribute loads and stresses on the skins, which improves impact resistance compared to a honeycomb. A core's compression strength prevents the thin skins from wrinkling failure, while its shear strength keeps the skins from sliding independent of each other when the panel flexes.

Camping option for nationals

A kind friend to the class has offered to make his cricket pitch available as a camping option for the Nationals. The deal is as follows;

-The suggested donation is £25 for the week (discounted to £20 PH for shared tents) towards the “new pavilion fund”.

-Camping is on the edge of a cricket pitch, with access to running water (probably cold only), a toilets and a communal dry area in the pavilion. Note:- the academy has ample showerage…

-Cost of camping INCLUDES leaving the field as it was found (i.e. remove litter/leave no junk)

-Pavilion has no electrics, but we have found something to run a kettle/pavilion lights from.

-The pitch is about 20 minutes by from the academy* and Weytax quote £25 for a minibus taxi from centre of Weymouth at 3am…

-The aim is that this will be a “sleeping base”, with largeness and much beering conducted in town and cab sharing the order for late night travel. Leaving the campsite as a quiet serene place, suitable for those wanting an early night. As an aside it would be good not to disturb the locals in the farm as they are heavily armed.

-This is NOT a campsite and as such we are the only occupants.

After a slight delay the course was set….. a small beat followed by a tight 2-sailer, then another beat to a broad reach to a too tight for the kite reach to another too tight for the kite reach to a beat back to the start/finish line. Atum had gone home to catch up with work, but in their place an RS700, a 29er and another 505 had come to play. The first race of Sunday, race 3, started in on/off twinning conditions with Mango at the head of the fleet with the fireballs and 505's. An unplanned dip on one of the tight tight reaches meant that mango was still crossing tacks with the Enterprise fleet (who started 2 minutes before) at the end of the first lap. Once the second lap started Mango found her feet and broke clear of the fireballs and 505's but couldn't gain ground on the RS700 due to the reaches being too tight to carry the kite. The wind was slowly increasing throughout the race with some interesting gusts now being prevalent on the course resulting in a boat or two being upside down on the course somewhere at any given time. On the final run the RS700 fell in on a gybe leaving Mango to pass and gain line honours.

Race 4 started off immediately after Race 3… the course was the same zig zagging snake trail, the wind was now in the mid to high teens, the water was still flatter than flat, perfect cherub conditions. A good first beat from Mango saw them round with the leading 505 and fireball. A gust on the tight 2 - sailer saw them break free from the fleet and pass the Enterprises soon up the next beat. Thus Mango sailed their own race sailing for the breeze and keeping clear of boats beating up the runs. Some cracking gusts downwind enabled Mango to put some distance on the chasing fleet. Line honours to Mango again with the leading fireball from Saturday trapped in the melee.

Race 5 followed another delicious lunch in the clubhouse. The wind had built a little further with lulls becoming a rarity and the occasional ragging of the main upwind. Mango capsized 30 secs before the start on a tack but most of the fleet were early and sailed down the line to the unfavoured shore end so being late at the favoured end wasn't much of a disadvantage. A big spinnaker twist that took an age to pull free saw us mid fleet just before the first tight 3 sailer. It soon became clear that the tight 3 sailers were now very VERY tight. The marks had been moved to make it more of a challenge, this coupled with the increase in breeze meant that only 2 legs out of 8 were kiteable. But there was enough wind for it not to matter. By the end of the 3rd lap Mango had passed the leading 505 and only had the RS700 in front. We got hooked into even bigger gusts on the final run and reach and really reeled back the 700, he was within 15 boats lengths at the final leeward mark. Unfortunately for the 700 his mainsheet jammer gave up on the final beat resulting in a swim for him giving line honours to mango.

The line honours also equated to 3 firsts on handicap (we were sailing off 920) for Sunday giving first place in the handicap fleet to Mango with Gordon and Ruth Evans in a fireball second and a well sailed Laser4.7 3rd.

All in all another well run event from Corus SC, especially helped by the cracking breeze and flat flat water. The courses weren't windward leeward and were very small compared to what has become the class norm in recent years but it was exceedingly enjoyable and does wonders for your boat handling/manoeuvring skills. Hopefully a few more cherubs will venture there next year.

The Web site is set up in a wiki which uses a very simple language to write and put in all the formatting needed to make the page look good. All this is described in the “Syntax” but you do not need to read it all to be able to make a good page. A good place to go and try things out is the “playground” and you can always edit a page to look at how it is written.

Below is a sample text showing quite a few of the different things that you can do with the wiki to make an interesting page about yourself. You could copy it into the playground to see what it looks like and use bits of it as a basis for your own page. I have included a lot of different stuff and it is not all nessicary for a simple page.

To make your own page go to the members area and log in using the username and password that should have been emailed to you.

If your name is listed in red then you can click on it and create your own page.

If your name is not there you will need to edit the members page and add your name to the list following the format of the rest of the names.

My current cherub is Primal Scream and below is the summary of the boat taken from Primal's own page.

Primal Scream

Primal Scream is an “Easy Wan” Design Cherub, it is the first Cherub to be designed to the 2005 rules. Designed around a sail plan of 15.5sqm upwind then an additional 21sqm asymmetric spinnaker.

The plan for the design was for a slightly more forgiving boat than AquaMarina to give a good base for learning to control the new rig. It was designed and built for Phil Alderson with the help of Dave Low.

After the Build

After building the boat we get to sail her, and she has proved to be a manageable handful. The hull has a lot more static stability than Aqua which has made for a good learning platform to get used to the bigger rig and sailing twin wire.

The Refit

Following an unscheduled visit to some rocks at Largo Bay Primal is feeling a bit sorry for herself so there will be quite a few repairs and modifications to be done over the winter.

1st April 2007

After Seven months Primal Scream goes sailing again. Full rig tension was pulled on with no cracks or bangs, the sails went on and we finally hit the water. First impresions were that I liked the new deck layout, it seems simple and clean. The rounded decks are eisier to stand on and the Centerboard goes up and down eisier than before. It is quite odd to sail as when I look forward it looks just like it always did, however when I look aft it is like sailing a different boat. Have a huge list of little jobs to do, including cutting a bit off the tiller, as with a shorter gantry the tiller sticks into the boat more than before.

27th March

Starting to get some fitting mounting points in place.

Mast bridge in place around the now obligatory section of RS800 mast that all rebuilt Cherubs must include somewhere in the structure

24th March

The new mast bridge, jib track thing ready to go in, I am not sure what to call it as it is not a foredeck, or a space frame so mast bridge will have to do.

22 March

The wing support bars are bonded in place.

The new deck has now been bonded in place and is almost complete.

The strip out begins. and more damage is uncovered. including cracks to the shroud bulkhead probably from when the support of the mast bridge was removed with full rig tension on.

All the damage is now removed as well as the bits that needed to go for access to asses the damage plus some bits that needed to go to make way for the new layout.

All it needs now is to be put back together.

Go Faster Tips

Having raced in an asymmetric open at the weekend, I realised that just keeping the stick pointing to the sky isn't going to get me to the front of the fleet. I was just wondering if anyone has any hints or tips to get the boat powering through the water. Particularly upwind we were struggling to get good boat speed. I'm sure we could all learn from each other and the boats at the head of the fleet. If you have any tips share them here!

Style Switcher

A number of different templates for the site have been created, it is possible to switch between them all using the drop down list below.

The Choices are

Current

Grey Green background with a series of boat pictures in the header, all boxes are square and have a navy outline.

Blue and Grey

A Modified version of the old scheme using some of the graphics and some of the colours from the previous site. Everything is in the same place as the Current Scheme

Carbon Round Boxes

A Black Carbon header box with subtle greys on a blue gradient background for the rest of the scheme. All the boxes have rounded corners. Things have been moved about a bit from the current scheme.

Dark Carbon

A Dark layout with light text using the Carbon header and a different logo. This layout has some blue buttons and features to brighten it up a bit.

Please give feedback on the different styles either here, direct to me phil_alderson or on the mailing list.

Small changes can be made quickly, and recommendations for different colours are welcome with the appropriate hex colour codes.

<random> The Cherub is a two-person 12 foot racing dinghy with asymmetric spinnaker and twin trapezes. Just twelve feet long, weighing around 70kgs fully rigged for sailing, the Cherub combines spectacular performance with the “on the edge” handling characteristics only found in true lightweight skiffs.

Originally created in New Zealand by John Spencer in 1951, Cherubs are mainly sailed in Australia and Great Britain, with a growing fleet in France. As well as this, boats can be found as far away as Czechoslovakia, Switzerland, the USA and Portugal.

The Cherub rules are simple and allow for maximum flexibility for designers, allowing boats to be created to incorporate sailors own ideas. Also means the class develops over time as techniques, materials and ideas improve. All this makes the Cherub is one of the most interesting and innovative of all dinghies: The challenge extends from the sailing skills to setting up the boat to suit the sailor, and maybe even designing and building, too.

Cherub sailing is the real thing: True planing performance upwind, but then turn the corner and you’re in for the ride of your life….

Sunday dawned with a little less breeze than Saturday blowing from the south. After a slight delay the course was set….. a small beat followed by a tight 2-sailer, then another beat to a broad reach to a too tight for the kite reach to another too tight for the kite reach to a beat back to the start/finish line. Atum had gone home to catch up with work, but in their place an RS700, a 29er and another 505 had come to play. The first race of Sunday, race 3, started in on/off twinning conditions with Mango at the head of the fleet with the fireballs and 505's. An unplanned dip on one of the tight tight reaches meant that mango was still crossing tacks with the Enterprise fleet (who started 2 minutes before) at the end of the first lap. Once the second lap started Mango found her feet and broke clear of the fireballs and 505's but couldn't gain ground on the RS700 due to the reaches being too tight to carry the kite. The wind was slowly increasing throughout the race with some interesting gusts now being prevalent on the course resulting in a boat or two being upside down on the course somewhere at any given time. On the final run the RS700 fell in on a gybe leaving Mango to pass and gain line honours.

Race 4 started off immediately after Race 3… the course was the same zig zagging snake trail, the wind was now in the mid to high teens, the water was still flatter than flat, perfect cherub conditions. A good first beat from Mango saw them round with the leading 505 and fireball. A gust on the tight 2 - sailer saw them break free from the fleet and pass the Enterprises soon up the next beat. Thus Mango sailed their own race sailing for the breeze and keeping clear of boats beating up the runs. Some cracking gusts downwind enabled Mango to put some distance on the chasing fleet. Line honours to Mango again with the leading fireball from Saturday trapped in the melee.

Race 5 followed another delicious lunch in the clubhouse. The wind had built a little further with lulls becoming a rarity and the occasional ragging of the main upwind. Mango capsized 30 secs before the start on a tack but most of the fleet were early and sailed down the line to the unfavoured shore end so being late at the favoured end wasn't much of a disadvantage. A big spinnaker twist that took an age to pull free saw us mid fleet just before the first tight 3 sailer. It soon became clear that the tight 3 sailers were now very VERY tight. The marks had been moved to make it more of a challenge, this coupled with the increase in breeze meant that only 2 legs out of 8 were kiteable. But there was enough wind for it not to matter. By the end of the 3rd lap Mango had passed the leading 505 and only had the RS700 in front. We got hooked into even bigger gusts on the final run and reach and really reeled back the 700, he was within 15 boats lengths at the final leeward mark. Unfortunately for the 700 his mainsheet jammer gave up on the final beat resulting in a swim for him giving line honours to mango.

The line honours also equated to 3 firsts on handicap (we were sailing off 920) for Sunday giving first place in the handicap fleet to Mango with Gordon and Ruth Evans in a fireball second and a well sailed Laser4.7 3rd.

All in all another well run event from Corus SC, especially helped by the cracking breeze and flat flat water. The courses weren't windward leeward and were very small compared to what has become the class norm in recent years but it was exceedingly enjoyable and does wonders for your boat handling/manoeuvring skills. Hopefully a few more cherubs will venture there next year.

Tiller Extensions:

Get landing-net poles from a fishing shop. “Carp Thief” is the type you want. “Rugby Tackle” in Rugby is the shop recommended by Iain Christie.

Get a thing called a 'whip' from a fishing shop. It is a long telescopic fishing rod with no reel or anything. Araldite the couple of sections at the fat end together, take out the thin ones - Hey presto - tiller extensions!
