======1988 U.K. Nationals====== =====Weston SC near Southampton===== ====Day 1==== A healthy turnout of 22. Race 1 was a testing 5/6 which was too much for the majority. The numbers afloat dropped dramatically after the first lap, while Matthew and Alistair Cope, in Johnny Fartpants (Fartpants) blasted round in first place looking quite comfortable compared to the rest. Guy Lewington and Alex Windsor (Flat Stanley, Murray mod. Snow) secured second after a frantic session to rig a borrowed boom after theirs broke on the way to the start. Dave Roe and Wendy Barclay brought Old Peculiar (Ellway 3) in third despite an awesome nose-dive and wipe-out off the clubhouse. Richard and Clare Butler in Eric Bloodaxe (Paterson), and Nick Mason and Alan Moore in Bills Boat (Deeley 5b) persevered through worsening and ferocious conditions to record 4th and 5th, the only other finishers. ====Day 2==== Friday dawned fresh but more manageable although there were still some fierce gusts about. Stanley took both races while Johnny F and Old Pec each had a second and third. Will Perret was 4th twice in Cripes Fiona, whilst Rob Lyne (Quick and Easy, Handley) and Simon Roberts/Kate Butler( Rebel, Howlett) had a fifth apiece. ====Day 3==== On Saturday the wind started moderate but soon built and reached 5-6 in the gusts later on for another testing day. The front runners were consistent with Stanley first, Johnny second and Bills Boat third in each race. Old Pec was 4th in boat, with 5ths shared between Rebel and Fallen Angel (Forman 8), sailed by Dave and Clare Edmonds. ====Day 4==== The final race on Sunday was held in a mild force 3 and was notable for the best collection of Cherubs afloat together for some years. The racing was hugely enjoyable with plenty of action and infighting wherever you happened to be in the fleet.- quite a novel experience. Most of the top crews swapped ends in this one and some new faces had a look at the front in a close race, Rebel led at the finish with Johnny F second and the Aircraft Carrier (Kevin Ellway, Ellway 2) third. Fiona and Stanley were 4th and 5th, After last years dismal turnout the event was relatively successful this year being only marred by the predominantly tough conditions which did a certain amount of damage, much of it incurred on the ramps o the lee shore. The conditions kept many of the older boats and less experienced crews ashore, and much of the racing was an exercise in survival. Report Will Perret & Various =====Results=====
